Here is some info about me.
I am a piano teacher based in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. I was born and raised in Southern Ontario, Canada, but moved to BC in 2012 for a fresh start. I grew up on a small hobby farm in Mennonite country where we raised chickens, rabbits, pigs, and always had a dog or two around. My cat, Tiger, was always my favourite.
We had a 100 year old upright piano that my brother, sister, and I played frequently. It was painted green for a long time until my dad refinished it to reveal the beautiful natural wood beneath. I started taking piano around the age of 7 and had a variety of teachers along the way. I was extremely shy and introvert and the piano became a safe space for me to belong. I would practice for hours at a time, always trying to be better.
At the age of 17 I attended a religious college. I studied Sacred Music, with a piano major and a vocal minor. I had a religious upbringing and it seemed like the right thing to do at that time. I learned a lot and I’m still using that knowledge today. I also studied classical music using the Royal Conservatory of Music books. I completed my Level 8 Piano Repertoire & Theory exams. I officially started teaching piano in 1992 at a music school that was close to the college.
My practical experience with piano started when I was about 15 years old. I started to accompany singers in my church and do special piano solos. This continued for many years and I progressed to lead church pianist and worship leader. This experience was so beneficial and there is no amount of practice that can replace that. My sister and I recorded a gospel album called “The Secret Place” and we travelled to various events, performing and ministering in Canada and the US. Other musical experiences … a wedding music business (I can’t count the number of weddings I have played at) … organist/vocalist at a friends funeral home … piano & vocal entertainer at The Olde School Restaurant and Piano Bar in Brantford, Ontario … Jazz duo (piano, vocal, and friend on upright bass) … and vocalist for various business projects.
My most recent places of employment for teaching were:
~ Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts in Maple Ridge, BC
~ Long & McQuade Langley, BC
As of August 2020, I am self-employed. Due to COVID-19 and the changes happening world-wide, I have decided to teach online from my home. I am immune-compromised and this is in my best interest for now.
